Making the transition from high school to college should be

Katie Sage |
fairly easy for Katie Sage, the daughter of Howard and Sue, who are members of Capital Electric Cooperative.
For starters, she has already earned 28 college credits from the University of Mary, even though she just graduated from St. Mary’s High School in May. She will also receive a financial boost from her family’s electric co-op, as she applied for and received the $1,000 scholarship as a consumer-member of Capital Electric Cooperative.
For the past 17 years, Basin Electric Power Cooperative has awarded student scholarships to children of member cooperative consumers, member cooperative employees and Basin Electric and subsidiary employees.
Vickie Volk, human resources assistant for Basin, says the generation and transmission cooperative awarded 165 scholarships this spring, including 120 to children of member cooperative consumers, 25 to children of Basin Electric or subsidiary employees, and 20 to the children of member cooperative employees.
Katie says her dad read about the scholarship opportunity in the Capital Electric center pages of theNorth Dakota LIVING magazine. He encouraged her to apply, based on her strong combination of academics and commitment to community service.
For the past several years, Katie has been active in the Spanish and science clubs; played soccer; and cleaned up parks and served food to those in need, through her volunteer efforts with the Leo Lions.
“We’re pretty proud of her,” says Howard, who works as a program manager of the state energy program for the Department of Commerce. Sue works as a manager at Edgewood Vista.
Katie, who excels in math and science, plans to attend North Dakota State University in the fall. She says she’s wanted to be a doctor ever since she can remember, and would like to study close to home for the next several years.
Before she leaves for school in the fall, Katie says she’ll stay busy working this summer as a certified nursing assistant at one of the local nursing facilities.
The staff at Capital Electric Cooperative congratulates Katie for earning the 2007 consumer-member scholarship!
