The Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin) scholarship program is designed to encourage and recognize the achievements of the children of full-time employees of Basin and its subsidiaries, and the children of member-cooperative employees and consumers. This recognition will be in the form of scholarships to assist with their college education.
The Basin scholarship program will award more than 160 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. Two of 20 scholarships for children of Basin or subsidiary employees will be designated for qualified applicants who plan to attend a certified vocational or technical school. Twenty will go to children of member-cooperatives employees, and more than 120 to children of member-cooperative consumers. There will be one $1,000 scholarship for each member-cooperative to award to a dependent of a consumer member.
The scholarships must be used for educational costs, and the student must enter college in the fall of the school year for which the scholarship is given. Checks will be made payable to the school, and will be distributed to the school by Basin. Scholarships will be distributed in two equal installments, with the first installment in August and the second installment in January.
Dependent children of member-system consumers are eligible. Also eligible are the natural or adopted dependent children of full-time employees of Basin, any of its subsidiaries, or member-cooperatives who have been employed there for a minimum of two years as of the application deadline.
The applicant must be a student who is enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time graduate or undergraduate course of study at an accredited, two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school. Previous Basin scholarship award winners are not eligible.
Basin scholarships will be awarded without regard to other awards, loans or financial assistance the applicant may have obtained.
Awards are based on the following criteria: SAT/ACT scores, grade-point average, work experience, participation in school and community activities, a statement by the student explaining his/her educational and career goals, and a written recommendation by a third party.
Applicants for the member-cooperative employee dependent category will first be screened by their cooperative. Member cooperatives will be responsible to select one recipient to be awarded a scholarship in the member-cooperative consumer category. The final recipient's completed application will then be forwarded to Basin by the member cooperative.
Member-cooperatives must have their finalist in the employee-dependent category and their winner's application to Basin by March 1st of each year. Therefor the deadline for all scholarships will be Feb. 18, 2014. A Basin selection committee will screen applications from the Basin and the subsidiary-employee group, and will make the final selection in the member-cooperative employee-dependent category. That selection committee will name the final scholarship winners and will assume responsibility to distribute the awards.
Upon notification of their selection, the scholarship award winners, or the member co-ops, are asked to notify the Basin human resources division with the name and address of the school the student will be attending. It is also important to know if the student has switched schools, or has decided not to attend.
Except for the requirements outlined in this brochure, no obligations will be imposed upon the student as a scholarship award winner. Other than payment of the scholarship, no obligations or liability are assumed by Basin, its subsidiaries or member-cooperatives.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship was Feb. 14, 2014. The co-op is no longer accepting applications.
