Essay Guidelines

2008 Essay contest guidelines for the Rural Electric Youth Tour:

• Students entering the contest must be a junior or senior in high school in the fall of 2008.

• The student and/or parent or guardian must be served by Capital Electric.

• The student must write an essay, not to exceed two standard 8.5- by 11-inch typewritten, double-spaced pages in length, on this topic: “We, as a state, struggle with a reputation of being remote, having only cold weather, and being less technically advanced than other states. Yet North Dakota is considered one of the best places to live in the U.S. If you were North Dakota’s spokesperson and it was your job to attract young professionals, families and new businesses to live in North Dakota, what would you do to change opinions of those who live outside North Dakota’s border?”

• Essays may be submitted in either hard copy or electronic formats to Capital Electric. Electronic submissions should conform to the two-page, double-spaced guideline described above. Each essay must be accompanied by a cover page displaying the entrant’s name, date of birth, school and grade, parent or guardian’s name, address and telephone number.

• Essays must arrive at Capital Electric no later than Monday, Nov. 19, 2007. E-mailed entries should be directed to: wese@capitalelec.com; hard-copy entries should be mailed to: Youth Tour Essay Contest, Capital Electric Cooperative, P.O. Box 730, Bismarck, ND 58502-0730.

• Essays will be evaluated and the winner selected by impartial, qualified judges.
