The promotion was an easy transition for Mertz, who worked as lead lineworker for the co-op.
“I trained with Bob for a couple weeks before he retired. We’ve worked together for many years and I was familiar with the duties, so the move was a comfortable one,” Mertz says.
Mertz joined Capital Electric in 1976. He worked in the warehouse, controlling inventory and ordering materials. He requested a transfer to the line crew, which was granted. In October, Mertz will have 30 years with Capital Electric Cooperative.
“I didn’t know what I was getting into back then,” says Mertz with a laugh. “I had no experience, and didn’t think I had a shot at getting a job. I was surprised when they called back the same day I submitted the application and asked if I could start that Monday.”
For now, Mertz has no plans to retire. He and his wife, Sharon, live in Bismarck. They attend various high school sporting events and proudly support their three daughters: one moving to Minneapolis for work; the second attending Minnesota State University-Moorhead to be a teacher in elementary education; and the third completing her senior year at Bismarck High School.
Outside of his family and work, Mertz enjoys woodworking. He builds small cabinets, entertainment centers and curio cabinets. He also bowls on different leagues and in tournaments, and has made countless friends over the years. Capital Electric congratulates Terry on his promotion and wishes him continued success with the co-op.
