Saving money on the monthly utility bill is a huge priority for many North Dakota residents. To help make homes more energy efficient, one Capital Electric Cooperative business consumer provides unique products and services to help area residents save.

One Source Lighting recently expanded from its location on 222 West Main Ave. It added a second location at the end of April in north Bismarck that showcases a residential lighting showroom for new homes or remodeling projects.

Jason Bryhn, general manager of One Source Lighting, says the move was prompted by growth in north Bismarck, and by the opportunity to relocate to a more highly traveled area.

The new building, located at 2300 Clydesdale Drive just north of Texas Roadhouse, features a huge variety of lighting fixtures, as well as decorating accessories like tables and mirrors, vases, wine racks and pictures. The former location on Main Street now operates as a commercial and business lighting showroom. It also serves as the electrical division, employing full-service electricians for home and commercial wiring projects, and lighting maintenance.

Matt Thesing founded One Source Lighting in 1998. He co-owns the company with Wayne Solberg, vice president and treasurer. The two stores employ 20-plus people companywide.

One Source is a member of Lighting One, a lighting retailer network, offering buying powers, plus a low-cost business structure, so savings can be passed on to the consumer.

Lighting has evolved over the years to become more energy efficient, says Bryhn.

“The basic measurement is lumens, or light output, per watt. If you can get more light per watt, you’re going to be more efficient.”

Solberg says incandescent light bulbs are becoming dated because more energy conscious consumers are recognizing the savings compact fluorescents offer over a light bulb’s life. He refers to a statistic from the Alliance to Save Energy, which indicates “95 percent of the energy used goes to heating the bulb, adding unwanted heat to your home in the summer.” The Alliance suggests replacing the five most-used light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs to save up to $60 per year in energy costs. Compact fluorescents use two-thirds less energy, give off the same amount of light, much less heat, and last up to 10 times longer than typical incandescent bulbs.

Businesses may also be eligible for a federal tax credit through the Energy Policy Act of 2005 for installing energy efficient lighting upgrades. The tax credit can prove to be very helpful in reducing the overall cost of the lighting upgrade, provided certain standards are surpassed. Most of these tax credits remain in effect through 2007. Businesses aren’t the only ones to benefit by using newer technology, says Bryhn. He advises people who are building homes or who are interested in remodeling, to visit the showroom and choose a lighting plan three to four months in advance of implementation. The staff at One Source Lighting designs, installs and programs the new lighting systems.
