Capital Electric Cooperative members Dave and Vicki Carpenter accept the 2007 Burleigh County Soil Conservation District Tree Care Award, along with their children (left to right) Kristi, Katie and Logan. |
Dave and his wife, Vicki, received the 2007 Burleigh County Soil Conservation District Tree Care Award Nov. 9. Over the past several years, Dave says they’ve planted thousands of trees on their land west of town including ponderosa pine, eastern red cedar, ash, oak, lilac, hackberry, crab apple and pear.
Their goal was to establish a barrier in-between a waterway, pasture and crop land, and to keep the soil from eroding. Then along a mile of property next to the Moffit road, Dave says they planted trees to create a living snow fence.
“That was a big project,” he says.
The annual tree care award, which is sponsored by Capital Electric Cooperative, is awarded to people who do an outstanding job of caring for and maintaining their wildlife and conservation tree plots. Bernard Falkenstein, director for the co-op, presented the Carpenter family with a plaque the night of the award ceremony.
When he’s not busy mowing his tree rows, Dave works as a U.S. Marshall for the district of North Dakota. Appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002, Dave serves one of the 94 districts nationwide. He says Vicki works “hard at home.”
