Flag design earns award

Capital Electric member Matt Magilke drove his award-winning 1952 Oliver 88 tractor in a Fourth of July parade.

Matt Magilke combined two of his favorite things -- tractors and patriotism -- and earned the People’s Choice winning tractor at the 2008 KFYR Radio Tractor Trek. Magilke, a Capital Electric Cooperative member from north Bismarck, will once again drive his 1952 Oliver 88 tractor at this year’s Tractor Trek, and it will once again display the prize-worthy American flag.

Matt and his wife, Caroline, have been Capital Electric members since 1974. He bought his Oliver tractor from a man in Portland, Ore. Matt restored the body and engine, and has driven the tractor in three or four Tractor Treks.

Wanting to do “something different,” he hired RJ Manufacturing of Mandan to paint the flag on the tractor’s side panels. Matt says he enjoys participating in Tractor Treks and meeting new people.

Growing up on a farm, Matt and his family drove Oliver tractors. Matt says he has since collected 16 tractors.

FAST FACT

About six or seven years ago, Matt and Caroline invested in a geothermal system to heat and cool their home. Matt says it’s the “best investment” he’s made.

The eighth-annual Tractor Trek will be held June 19, 2009. This year’s route will make a loop around Morton County. It will begin at Dacotah Speedway in Mandan and proceed past the Tesoro Refinery onto Highway 1806. It will continue on to County Road 140. Drivers will stop for lunch at the new Harmon Lake Recreation Area and then get back onto Highway 25. They will return to Mandan on Old Highway 10 and end their tour back at Dacotah Speedway.
