Directors of the Charitable Trust award 11 new grants

The co-op elves were at it again. Even though Christmas

The following Capital Electric members and employees met to discuss Operation Round Up applications and determine grant worthiness on Feb. 7 (clockwise starting at the left): Wes Engbrecht, director of communications and public relations; Phil McKenzie; Gordon Felchle; Paul Fitterer, business manager; Ed McCarty; June Brown and Quirina Schmidt.

is over, the five people who serve on the board of directors for the Charitable Trust felt like giving gifts. Capital Electric Cooperative members Ed McCarty, Gordon Felchle, June Brown, Quirina Schmidt and Phil McKenzie met Feb. 7 to award the latest round of grants through the Operation Round Up program.

McKenzie, the most recent member to serve as a director for the Charitable Trust, was nominated at the Member Advisory Committee meeting held on Nov. 7. He will fill the position vacated by Curtis Anderson, who passed away in January. Each director of the Charitable Trust agrees to serve for a three-year term.

The Charitable Trust collects funds for Operation Round Up, which is a voluntary program set up for co-op consumers. Participants agree to have their monthly electric billings “rounded up” to the nearest dollar each month. Those pennies are then placed in the Capital Electric Charitable Trust to be awarded to various groups and organizations. Almost 6,000 electric customers of Capital Electric Cooperative participate in Operation Round Up, generating close to $3,000 a month in funds for the Trust. Since its inception in August 1997, more than 28 million pennies in Operation Round Up funds have been donated to various organizations and individuals.

The purpose of the Charitable Trust is to donate funds to organizations or individuals in and around the Capital Electric Cooperative service area for charitable, educational or scientific purposes.

The directors of the Charitable Trust awarded 11 new grants totaling $11,500 to the following recipients:
• Stand for Children Day Committee: To pay for costs relating to its day at the zoo;
• Lincoln Area Park District: To purchase new picnic tables for the park;
• Ruth Meiers Hospitality House: To help fund Joanne’s Healthcare Center;
• Wilton Mentor Program: To help fund its program for youth and adult mentors;
• The Banquet: To help pay for the cost of running its weekly community dinner;
