Farm Rescue volunteer Jay Schepp accepts a check at the Operation Round Up grant presentation from LeAna Hug, board member of Capital Electric's Charitable Trust. |
Pam Musland, director of operations for Farm Rescue, says 13 of the state's 16 electric distribution cooperatives have supported Farm Rescue in some way.
"Farmers use power on the farm and need their REC. And by supporting Farm Rescue, RECs support their members and their farming operations. It's a good marriage," Musland says.
Capital Electric members Dennis Burrer, Jerry Doan, LeAna Hug, Patricia Ryberg and Quirina Schmidt serve as board members of the Charitable Trust. On Aug. 16, they met to carefully review the recent batch of grants and discuss the needs of the applicants. Following the meeting, the board awarded 13 grants totaling $9,050.

"My father lost his right hand in a farm accident in 1955 before there was anything like Farm Rescue. Back then, neighbors still got together. That's what they did for dad; they harvested his crop. And that's what Farm Rescue is doing for people now," she explains.
"Also, every one of us [board directors] knows of someone who had been helped by Farm Rescue. The program is near and dear to every single one of us."
Capital Electric held a check presentation ceremony on Aug. 25, 2011 at co-op headquarters in Bismarck. The recipients included:
