Operation Round Up

Small Change, Big Impact

Operation Round Up is a voluntary program that allows Capital Electric members to easily contribute to charitable causes right here in our local communities. By simply rounding up your monthly electric bill to the next dollar, you create a powerful, collective fund that strengthens our service area.

Since 1997, the pennies donated through this program have generated thousands of dollars to support rural fire and emergency services, children's programs, community improvements, and neighbors facing unexpected hardships.

How the Program Works

The concept is simple, automatic, and makes giving effortless:

  • Rounding Up: Each month, your electric bill is rounded up to the nearest whole dollar amount. For example, a bill of $74.42 becomes $75.00.
  • The Donation: The extra pennies (in this case, 58 cents) are deposited into the Capital Electric Charitable Trust, Inc.
  • The Maximum Cost: The average contribution per member is only about 50 cents per month, with a maximum annual contribution of $11.88.
  • The Impact: When thousands of members participate, these small amounts combine to form significant funds for local grants.

Grant Funding: Putting Pennies to Work

The funds gathered through Operation Round Up are managed and distributed by an independent five-member Board of Directors for the Charitable Trust. These directors are fellow Capital Electric members who volunteer their time to review applications and determine recipients.

Who Can Apply for Funds?

The Charitable Trust considers applications from two categories:

  1. Organizations: Rural fire and emergency departments, non-profits, school groups, and community improvement projects within the Cooperative's service area.
  2. Individuals or Families: Persons in need facing personal crises, medical expenses, or other unexpected hardships.

Application Deadlines

The Charitable Trust Board meets twice per year to review applications:

  • Spring Review: Applications must be submitted by February 28th.
  • Fall Review: Applications must be submitted by August 31st.
